A number of women in the UK are being treated by a drug-drug ring that is being accused of failing to warn them of the risks of Viagra, a group of medicines is said to have warned women to avoid the tablets, doctors have said.
Dr Katelia Merton, chief executive of the women’s health charity The Independent, said: “It’s very distressing to women and men alike as to their sexual lives. We know of several cases where men are being prescribed Viagra to help them with their erectile dysfunction, and so we’re working hard to find safer alternatives.”
A Viagra tablet is a prescription medication which contains the same active ingredients as a Viagra prescription and is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
It was the first time a drug had been linked to a dangerous drug reaction. It has been available to men over the age of 18 since 1998.
Viagra is prescribed to treat the condition of male sexual interest and performance, as well as premature ejaculation.
The side effects are rare and include headache, flushing, stuffy or runny nose, and indigestion.
Dr Merton said: “I would hope that the warnings we have been given in recent months, and our experience with the past few months, will help women and men in the UK and elsewhere in the world have a safe choice about Viagra.”
The drug company that owns the drug is Pfizer. It will now be available on prescription in 50mg doses.
Dr Merton said: “The safety and effectiveness of Viagra have been well established in clinical trials and are widely accepted. The potential for side effects is a factor in its ability to achieve the benefits we are seeking.”

The NHS is the first country in the world to offer Viagra to women, with some states allowing it for prescription only.

The warnings to avoid Viagra come into effect on Tuesday, a day after the NHS told a committee of medical advisers that it might make it to the US market in the second half of the year.
The drug was tested by the drug’s manufacturer after being prescribed by Dr GPs at the beginning of March.
The committee said: “We think it is important that the drug has been assessed and approved for use in the UK and that any warnings given to patients and prescribers are given in a timely manner.”

The company said: “We are still in the final stages of the trials and we expect all trials to be completed before mid-2023.
“We’re also working with regulatory bodies to ensure the UK drug is safe and appropriate for women and men.
